Only nine? Buckingham is a rebel with a cause. Or nine, for that matter. Many of us in the work field encountered “sacred cows” of high-performance management that no one is willing to touch or question. He does that skilfully and although it may feel a bit contrarian for some readers, I found his bravery and reasoning compelling in most cases. The lie I resonated with the most, I wonder why, is that “the best people are well-rounded”. I now for a fact that many companies have intensive and expensive programs to round their best people well. It may not always lead to the results they hoped for.Obviously, things are not black or white, but they are not exclusively contextual either. What works in one place may lead to opposite results in another and treating certain beliefs or practices as irrefutable is defying their purpose of producing the best possible results in a given environment.
