Fantastic box set containing the four films director Alfred Hitchcock made with the legendary Hollywood producer David O. Selznick.
In 'Rebecca', Joan Fontaine stars as a young woman who, after a brief Monte Carlo courtship and a rushed marriage, returns with the handsome and mysterious Maxim de Winter (Laurence Olivier) to his Cornish country estate, Manderlay.
The new bride receives a hostile reaction from the housekeeper Mrs Danvers (Judith Anderson), and finds herself intimidated and overcome by the surviving traces of de Winter's first wife, Rebecca. Then, as she becomes more and more unhappy, she stumbles upon the secret of Rebecca's death.
In 'Notorious', Alicia Huberman (Ingrid Bergman) is a social butterfly recruited by the American government to work as a spy in Rio de Janeiro in the years directly following World War Two. Helped by fellow agent Devlin (Cary Grant) - who soon falls in love with her - she is ordered to seduce and marry Alexander Sebastian (Claude Rains), a member of a covert group of exiled Nazis.
She succeeds in marrying Sebastian, and uncovers a Nazi plot to stockpile uranium, but when Sebastian himself realises who is wife is working for, he begins to plot to get rid of her.
In 'Spellbound', psychiatrist Dr Constance Peterson (Ingrid Bergman) is intrigued by the arrival of her new boss, Dr Edwardes (Gregory Peck). Edwardes seems to be suffering from amnesia, and when he faints it transpires that he is in fact an imposter, and may be guilty of murdering the real Dr Edwardes.
Constance then sets about probing the imposter's psyche in an attempt to discover the truth.
Finally, in 'The Paradine Case', barrister Anthony Keane (Gregory Peck) is hired to defend the wealthy Mrs Paradine (Alida Valli), who has been accused of murdering her husband. Keane finds himself falling in love with his client, becoming obsessive about her to the exclusion of all else.
However, the judge in the case (Charles Laughton) makes things difficult, adopting a belligerent attitude towards Keane because he secretly desires the lawyer's wife (Ann Todd).
