Berlin-based British-Israeli artist Yishay Garbasz is no stranger to publicly documenting very personal journeys. In 2004, with camera in hand, she re-traced her mothers movement through World War II concentration camps, photographing how these places look today in order to better understand her mother and herself. Liberated by British troops in 1945, Garbaszs mother survived her ordeal though she rarely discussed it. The resulting book, In My Mothers Footsteps, created a bridge of understanding between the two, and it also revealed to Garbasz how her mothers trauma had greatly affected her. The process helped Garbasz better realize her own identity, part of which included undergoing a series of transgender surgeries. Becoming brilliantly and bravely makes visible the stages of Garbaszs transformation with a flipbook format that includes two essays that will frame the project in a cultural context. Yishay Garbaszs work has been featured in solo and group shows in the United States, Europe and Asia. Her Becoming project will be a featured installation at the 2010 Busan Biennale.
